Traditional finite element methods can be used to solve the related boundary value problems only if the meshes are constructed according to the material interfaces. This requires each element in a mesh to be occupied essentially by one of the materials, each element needs to be on one side of a material interface; hence, the mesh has to be unstructured for non-trivial interface configurations. This restriction usually causes a substantial negative impact on the simulation cost in certain applications. In this talk, I will discuss a class of recently developed immersed finite element (IFE) methods intended to alleviate this restriction. The basic idea of the IFE methods will be described through plasma engine design and lunar dust problem in aerospace engineering. A survey of the research on IFE will be given, and numerical examples will also be presented to illustrate features of IFE methods. 林涛教授简介： Prof. Tao Lin obtained his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Sichuan University and his master’s degree from Chinese Academy of Sciences. He obtained the Ph.D. degree from University of Wyoming under the guidance of Prof. Richard Ewing in 1990. In 1989, Dr. Lin worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He became a tenured professor there in 1995, and he was then promoted to a full professor in 2001. Prof. Lin’s research interests involve parameter identification of partial differential equations (PDEs), finite element methods for PDEs and integro-differential equations, finite-volume-elements for PDEs, scientific computing in aerospace engineering and medical imaging. He and his colleagues recently introduced the immersed finite element method that can use structured meshes to efficiently solve partial differential equations with non-trivial discontinuous coefficients.
